Which electricity company is best for an apartment?

The best fit depends on your address, expected monthly usage and contract terms. A provider’s lowest advertised rate may assume more electricity than you use. Compare actual plan costs rather than choosing a brand or assuming every apartment needs the same amount of power.

First ask the property manager whether you choose your own retail provider or electricity is included or billed through the property. Retail choice is not available at every Texas address. If you can choose, confirm the exact unit and service start date with the provider.

Start with your usage, not your apartment size alone

Use prior bills when available. If this is your first apartment, treat 500 and 1,000 kWh as comparison scenarios, not a forecast. Air conditioning, insulation, appliances and whether heating is electric can change your actual use.

Why a cheap 1,000-kWh rate can cost more at 500 kWh

Illustration only: assume Plan A costs 18¢/kWh and gives a $50 credit only at 1,000 kWh or above. Plan B costs 14¢/kWh with no credit. With no other charges in this simplified example:

Plan B costs less in the lower-use month, while Plan A costs less at 1,000 kWh. Real offers can include additional charges; read their EFL and minimum-usage and bill-credit terms.

Match the contract to your plans for the apartment

• Stable usage and a longer stay: compare fixed-rate offers at your low and high monthly usage, including termination fees.
• Uncertain move date: compare shorter or month-to-month options against longer terms. A flexible contract is not automatically cheaper.
• Limited cash for a deposit: check no-deposit options. Prepaid accounts still need funding and balance management; some have contracts.

Move-in checklist

1. Confirm who bills electricity, your unit’s service address and any property requirements.
2. Ask the provider to confirm availability and the connection date. Do not assume the power is already on or that same-day service is guaranteed.
3. Read the EFL, terms, upfront charges, credit/deposit conditions and any new-customer restrictions.
4. Save the enrollment confirmation and provide proof of service if your property requires it.
5. Check your first bill and actual usage against the plan you selected.

Questions renters ask

Does the electricity contract need to end with my lease?

Compare both dates and the termination terms. If you move, ask about transfer options and any moving exception, including required documentation. Do not assume every cancellation is free.

Does no deposit mean no credit check?

No. A postpaid deposit waiver can depend on credit or other eligibility. A specific prepaid offer may avoid both, but you still need to fund usage. Check the written offer.

Are the sample prices available everywhere in Texas?

No. Each sample is tied to the ZIP and delivery area shown. Your address, provider eligibility and enrollment channel determine available offers.
