No-Deposit Electricity in Texas: Compare Your Options

Understand prepaid plans, deposit waivers and credit checks. Compare initial payments, contract terms and total costs before choosing no-deposit electricity in Texas.

Reviewed · Simple Texas Energy

No deposit does not mean no upfront payment

A security deposit and money used to buy electricity are different. Prepaid service can avoid a deposit while still requiring an opening balance. Postpaid service bills after usage and may waive a deposit when you meet its requirements.

No-deposit, no-credit-check and no-contract are different promises. Ask about each separately and check availability at your address.

Provider options with published no-deposit terms

Provider pages checked October 2, 2026. These are examples, not every available provider. Compare the cash needed to start separately from the ongoing electricity price.

For an approximate cost at a listed tier, multiply cents/kWh by that tier and divide by 100. Taxes and one-time charges may differ. Do not interpolate between tiers: a missed bill-credit threshold can change the price sharply. Availability and prices may change after the recorded date.

The general comparison tool also lists postpaid plans. Confirm prepaid availability and the opening balance directly with the provider.

The sample prices above come from our plan feed. Provider policies were checked separately; eligibility and current documents still need confirmation before enrollment. Reliant Prepaid Power is not priced in this sample, so we do not infer its rate from Reliant postpaid listings.

Five checks before choosing no-deposit electricity

  1. Collect the documents: Electricity Facts Label, Terms of Service and, for prepaid, the Prepaid Disclosure Statement.
  2. Separate cash today from ongoing costs: an opening balance funds usage; a deposit may be refundable; a signup fee may not be.
  3. Compare several usage levels: use your lower-usage and summer months, including recurring charges and credits.
  4. Check the exit terms: prepaid describes when you pay, not necessarily contract length. Do not assume there is no cancellation fee.
  5. Confirm a connection date: ask about processing cutoffs and address issues instead of assuming same-day service.

Questions before funding a prepaid account

  • How much must I pay today, and how much becomes usable electricity credit?
  • Is the rate fixed or variable? What recurring fees apply?
  • How do low-balance alerts and payments work?
  • What happens if the balance is too low? What assistance or payment arrangements are available?
  • What are the contract, cancellation and remaining-balance refund terms?

Prepaid service needs active balance management. Read the disclosure’s notices and disconnection terms rather than assuming you can wait for a monthly bill. Texas’s prepaid-service rule explains the disclosures and protections.

Is avoiding a deposit always cheaper?

No. In a simple example, a bill that is $20 higher each month costs $240 more over a year. Compare that ongoing difference separately from a potentially refundable deposit and from what you can afford today. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a quote.

Our ordinary comparison results are not a deposit-approval decision. Confirm any prepaid or no-deposit offer with the provider; inventory and eligibility can differ.
