Pay before usage, then keep the account funded
With prepaid electricity, you put money into an account and charges reduce the balance as you use power. You replenish the account instead of waiting for a conventional monthly bill. Check how each provider reports usage and calculates daily charges.
Prepaid does not automatically mean no contract, no fees or guaranteed same-day connection. Confirm those terms for the specific plan and address.
Prepaid service is not available to customers designated as Critical Care Residential or Chronic Condition Residential under Texas rules. Using medical equipment does not by itself establish that designation. Contact your provider about your status and postpaid options before enrolling.
How to start
- Confirm address eligibility and ask for the current offer documents.
- Read the Electricity Facts Label, Terms of Service and Prepaid Disclosure Statement.
- Ask what initial payment is required and how much becomes usable credit.
- Confirm the start date and set up a reliable notification method.
- Check the first deductions against the plan terms.
Managing the balance
Check your balance more often when usage rises. A household running air conditioning heavily can use its funds faster than in a mild week. Ask about alerts, automatic payments and any payment-processing fees rather than assuming all top-ups are free or immediate.
Ask what happens near the minimum balance and what assistance is available. The disclosure should explain notices and disconnection conditions. Read Texas’s prepaid-service rule.
A simple budgeting example
If charges average $6 per day, $60 would cover about ten days. This is a budgeting illustration, not a rate quote. Actual usage, fees and price changes can shorten or extend that period; use your account’s reported charges rather than treating this estimate as a safe disconnection deadline.
Before choosing an offer
- Is the rate fixed or variable, and how are delivery charges included?
- Is there a contract or a cancellation fee?
- What initial and minimum balances apply?
- How can you receive notices and add money?
- What happens to unused funds after service ends?
